Ain’t Life Fun?
It may have seemed rather quiet around here lately but there is a reason for that. All hell has been breaking loose behind-the-scenes!
One of my most annoying (recent) problems involves my left wrist. Some time in late June, I developed tenosynovitis - a condition in which a tendon becomes inflamed. Having done the whole “rest, anti-inflammatories and wrist splint” thing, I was eventually offered some treatment which involved having a steroid injection into the painful area with a view to settling the inflammation down and I duly accepted.
So a few weeks ago, my wrist was injected with a local anaesthetic, DMI (the steroid)… and something else. The “something else” was bacterial!
After 30 hours of severe pain, under the assumption that I was suffering from an allergic reaction to the injection, I decided to seek help at a local clinic. My “allergic reaction” was diagnosed as an acute infection that was now working its way up my lower arm! I was immediately prescribed large doses of antibiotics, threatened with hospitalisation and told to monitor the spread of the inflammation over the next few days. Any increase in inflammation and I was to go straight to my local hospital.
Not exactly the most pleasant way to spend the weekend.
Three weeks later, I’ve finally finished the antibiotics and my wrist has resumed its normal colour. However, it is still more painful than it was pre-injection. Also the episode seems to have exacerbated my other pre-existing joint problems so that, what with the wrist splint, a sling and a neck collar, I currently look like a train wreck victim!
Work proceeds but veeerrry slowly.
Hi Mel,
Sounds like you are not having the best of times. Keep your chin up - I expect time will be the healer.
Get well soon.
All the best,
Jim
