The joiner arrived today to measure up and design our new bookcases.<\/p>\n
We’ve been promising ourselves some really serious<\/strong> bookcases for over 6 years – in fact, ever since we moved into this house. The downstairs room has a really high ceiling and deep alcoves either side of the chimney breast that really cry out for shelving of some description. And given the sheer number of books we have, we need all the shelves we can get!<\/p>\n The problem is that nothing that is ready-built or flat-packed comes anywhere near the size we want. The current bookcases (5 of them) are about 6 foot tall and about 3 foot wide and they look quite small in the alcoves. So, after exhausting every furniture shop we could find, we decided that we really needed to have proper bookcases made-to-measure.<\/p>\n When they’re finished, they’ll be 8 foot high and about 4 foot across and will have a mixture of large shelves for graphic novels etc,. medium sized shelves for the growing number of hardbacks and a large number of ‘small’ shelves that will still take a double row of paperbacks. One of the bookcases will be shelving from top to bottom, a second will have a large cupboard at its base (to support the graphic novels and provide storage for various calendars, jigsaw, posters, games and other paraphernalia) whilst the third will have a custom-built ‘cupboard-base’ to house the TV, DVD recorder and all of the other ‘home entertainment’ gadgets.<\/p>\n But the main feature will be lots and lots of bookshelves<\/strong>.
