Plaid Scarf
This is actually a pseudo-plaid that is incredibly easy to create. You just crochet horizontal stripes until you have the length you want. Then you weave triple strands of yarn vertically between the double crochet stitches — leaving enough at either end to form a fringe.
I adapted the stripe pattern from a Scottish plaid for this but you might want to chose a different stripe pattern.
Materials
100gm navy DK (N)
50gm light brown (B)
50gm purple (P)
5mm hook
Crochet Instructions
With N, ch 27.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * dc in next ch, repeat from * across . Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Dc in next dc, * dc in next dc, repeat from * across, ending with dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat Row 2, work 4 more rows with N.
Continue in following sequence starting with the 4 rows of B.
Color sequence for rows
6 rows N, 4 rows B, 2 rows P, 2 rows N, 2 rows B, 2 rows N, 2 rows P, 4 rows B.
Finish with 6 rows N.
Vertical Weaving
Using tapestry needle threaded with 3 strands of same color, weave yam vertically through spaces. Begin at side edge, weave over and under deach mesh space, leaving 7 inches for fringe at each end. Cut yarn. Weave 2nd vertical row beginning with under, then over.
Colour sequence for weaving
4 rows N, 2 rows B, 2 rows P, 2 rows N, 2 rows B, 2 rows N, 2 rows P, 2 rows B.
Finish with 4 rows N.
Work 1 row sc along edges with N.
Fringe
For each 3-strand colour, use the hook to pull through a loop incorporating all 3 strands, pull both free ends through the loop and tighten evenly. Repeat along both ends. Trim evenly.
Note
I only tied off the fringe at one end of the scarf, then washed & blocked the scarf lightly before tying off the other end.
I love this pseudo-plaid scarf! I have been searching for a special pattern for a few skeins of coordinating yaarn that I purchased after Christmas. I didn’t know exactly what project I wanted to make with them, but I was sure I’d know it when I saw it. I was right… this will be perfect!
