Seraphina’s Shawl: Quick Reference
I managed to get hold of 500gms of Debbie Bliss Stella in Chocolate (Shade 005) the other week and decided to make Seraphina’s Shawl. Not long after I started, I realised that there were a few omissions in the pattern instruction – mainly missing ch1 before, and after, each shell-in-shell and a missing V-stitch at the end of each row. But they were pretty easy to sort out. I completed the first 14 rows in one sitting and settled down to the 4-row repeat part of the pattern.
And that’s where I hit a problem…
Because I began to find the pattern harder and harder to follow because of the way in which the original directions were written. After struggling for a little while, I gave up, sat down with the pattern and wrote out a Quick Reference guide for the 4 sequence rows. Maybe someone else will find it useful.

Stitches
Shell-in-shell: (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in ch2-space of previous shell
V-stitch: (dc, ch1,dc)
Main Pattern: dc 3dc, [ch1, shell-in-shell, ch1]
Sequence Row 1
- Start: ch4, dc in same stitch, ch1, dc in ch1-space, dc next 2dc, (dc, ch1, dc) in next dc, (main pattern to just before point)
- To Point: dc next 3dc, (dc, ch1, dc) next dc, dc next 2dc, dc in ch1-space
- From Point: dc ch1-space, dc next 2dc, (dc, ch1, dc) next dc, (main pattern to just before end of row)
- End: (dc, ch1, dc) in next dc, dc next 2dc, dc in ch1-space, V in 3rd chain

Awesome! I also love the Seraphina pattern, and it took a bit to figure out the sequence because of the errors in her pattern page. I keep telling myself I’m going to write out the correct instructions (my roommate tried to make the shawl but she couldn’t get past the mistakes, and threw up her hands in disgust after I tried explaining it — but she doesn’t work to patterns, and I always have). It really is an amazing pattern. But I’m having a blast looking through all the patterns you have here!
I keep meaning to add more. I have bits of paper with scribbled instructions all over the place. I just need to take the time to sit down & collate them. But, in the meantime, I’m glad you’ve found what I have posted already to be useful. I can also understand your friend’s frustration. I think there are times when you should just wing it and see what comes out instead of slavishly following a pattern. 🙂
