Openwork Crochet Scarf
I had a single skein of Wild Fire Fibres Bambino (Purple Lotus) and was looking for something fairly simple that would show this lovely, drapey, yarn off.
After some false starts, I settled on an openwork scarf with borders at each end based on Doris Chan’s All Shawl Strawberry Lace.
Materials
400 yards soft 4ply yarn
5mm crochet hook
Scarf Body
Foundation: Ch 54st.
Row 1: Skip next 8st, sc, * ch5, skip next 4st, sc **; repeat from * to **, turn (9 loops + 1 half loop)
Row 2: Ch5, skip next 2 chains in the loop, sc in the 3rd chain of the loop, *ch5, sc in the 3rd chain of the next loop; repeat from * to last loop, ch5, sc in the 3rd chain of the last loop, turn (58st: 9 loops + 1 half loop).
Repeat row 2 until scarf is the required length. Remember that the lace borders will each add about 3.25 inches to the scarf’s final length.
Next row: Ch 1, sk 1, sc in every st until last loop, sc in sc, sc in next 2 st (56st).
Strawberry Lace Border
Stitches
SH (shell): 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in same space
SH in SH: make shell in ch-2 space of previous shell
Picot: After completing a dc, ch 3, reach back and insert hook from top to bottom into front two strands of dc just made, like going back through the path of the last step of the dc, sl st to close picot.
PF (Picot Fan): (dc, ch 1) 2 times, dc, Picot, (ch 1, dc) 2 times all in same ch-sp
Strawberry Lace
Worked on a multiple of 8sts.
Row 1: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in first sc, * ch 3, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, skip next sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, skip next 2 sc, SH in next sc;** repeat from * to **, turn
Row 2: Ch 2, * SH in SH, ch 1, skip next ch-3 sp, [tr, ch 1] 5 times in next ch-3 sp, skip next ch-3 sp;** repeat from * to **, SH in last SH, turn
Row 3: Ch 2, * SH in SH, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp 3 times, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp** repeat from * to **, SH in last SH, turn
Row 4: Ch 2, * SH in SH, ch 2, skip next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp 2 times, ch 2, skip next ch-1 sp;** repeat from * to **, SH in last SH, turn
Row 5: Ch 2, * SH in SH, ch 3, skip next ch-2 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 2 times, skip next ch-2 sp;** repeat from * to **, SH in last SH, turn
Row 6: Ch 2, * PF in ch-2 sp of next shell, ch 1, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, PF in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1;** repeat from * to **, PF in ch-2 sp of last shell, fasten off.
Rejoin yarn to the other end of scarf. Working into the backs of the stitches, ch5, skip next 2st, sc, * ch5, skip next 5st, sc; repeat from to , turn (58st)
Next row: Ch 1, sk 1, sc in every st until last loop, sc in sc, sc in next 2 st (56st).
Repeat Rows 1 – 6 of Strawberry Lace.
First off – love the scarf! It’s beautiful! I have a question, though. I’m trying to follow the pattern, but am a bit confused with part of row 2. The instructions say to “Ch5, skip next 2 sc, sc” which doesn’t really make much sense. I’ve tried skipping next 2 st and continuing, but everything ends up a bit ruffled. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Sorry for the confusion. I made it sound a lot more complicated than it actually is.
I’ve re-written Row 2 of the Scarf Body to try and make it easier to follow. All you’re really doing is looping from the middle stitch of the loop in the row below to the middle of the next loop in the row below with 5 chains (a new loop) between.

this is such a beautiful pattern. it is a real shame that no matter what i try to do with it i cannot make it work. following the body instructions i ended up with 8 ch spaces across, the picture appears to have 11 ch spaces across. it doesn’t work from the start of the ch. when i ch 47, then ch5 (as in 1st row) then sk 8 ch and sc in 9th ch, then sk 5 ch and sc in the 6th ch across it leaves 1 unworked ch. i tried it from the start by sk 9 ch and sc in 10th and with ch 4 instead of 5 in row 1 and sk 8 ch and sc in 9th ch, but with both ways at the end to start the border it still does not work. border says ch1, then sc in every OTHER stitch for a total of 32 sc, however this is not possible, for this to work there needs to be 64 st and with ch 47+ch 5 there are only 52 st to work with. i even tried adding more ch at the start to end with 64 st across, but still doesn’t work, sc in every other st ends in the ch 2 sp instead of the ch 3 sp where it should end. please help, i don’t know what i am doing wrong that i cannot make this work!

I’ve amended the pattern and tested it out on some scrap yarn.

I wanted to say so far I am having no problems following the patterns. One question… after finished do you block the scarf or leave it as is?
I just blocked it lightly.
Mel, thanks for such a beautiful pattern! I can’t wait to start it. One quick question, though. In the Strawberry Lace rows 1-6, when you say to “repeat from to”, does that mean to repeat from the * to the ; in each row? Thanks for the help!
Sorry about that. Looks like some * were omitted when I transcribed the pattern. I’ve fixed that now, so the lace pattern should be easier to follow.
I love this scarf but I’m not a real proficient at crochet. From the problems people stated above it seems that the directions have been amended enough that I feel like I can at least try.
Besides, my knitting hands are getting inflamed and I have ergonomic crochet hooks. So I’m going to give it a try! I’ll let you know how I make out. But first, 2 pair of quick bulky knitted mitts to make.

A question about row two of the Strawberry Lace border. In that row is an instruction to “tr”. I don’t see that noted in the abbreviations. Does that mean to Triple Crochet?
Yes — that’s a triple/treble crochet.
Hi there! This pattern is lovely. I’m on row 2 of the strawberry lace section and am a bit confused. After the tr, does “ch 1 5 times in next ch-3 sp” mean chain 5? Or ch 1 then 5 treble crochet in next ch-3 SP? Or is it something else entirely? Thanks!
Sorry – it should read “[tr, ch 1] 5 times in next ch-3 sp”. I’ll amend the pattern to make it clearer.
Hello! I’m loving the main part of this scarf but I’m terribly confused about the lace portion. Is there anyway you could post a video of this or maybe point me in the direction of a good video that could explain how these types of stitches are done?
I’m afraid that I don’t have (or know of) a video that could help/ Can be you be a little more specific about exactly which stitches you are having a problem with?
I’m sorry, I’ve just never done this type of stiching, so I’m not sure where to start. Does the first row of the strawberry lace start right after the sc in the last two st of the last row of the scarf?
Also after a few mishaps I was able to get the main part of the scarf to look just beautiful!
Yes – the first row of the lace follows right after the sc in the last two st of the last row of the main scarf body. Just turn and start the first row of the strawberry lace pattern. At the end of the 6th lace row, fasten off and rejoin yarn to the other end of scarf.
Working into the back loop of each of the stitches, ch5, skip next 2st, sc, * ch5, skip next 5st, sc; repeat from to , turn (58st)
Next row: Ch 1, sk 1, sc in every st until last loop, sc in sc, sc in next 2 st (56st).
Turn and start the lace pattern again.
