I Aten't Dead

Something, nothing and everything…

Granny Afghan

I’ve always wanted to make a multi-coloured afghan from proper old-fashioned Granny Squares. Finally found a pattern that fitted the bill on the Coats & Clark site, It took me about 6 weeks to gather 12 different yarn colours that I liked and thought would work well together. Ended up with quite a mixture of yarns. Some I liked more than others.

The orange and bright blue yarns were merino, so needless to say, I loved them. The dark blue was actually 4ply that I used double-stranded but that had some lovely subtle shades in it and was very soft. The light green Jaeger yarn was a bit of a disappointment – far too rough for my tastes. The dark red was a little thick with poor stitch definition. The light purple was bamboo — lovely and soft to work with but, in hindsight, probably not the best yarn type to use in a project like this. It’s a little too stretchy compared with the wools.

Overall, though, I was really pleased with the result. Took about 2 months to make at a rate of about 1 square per day — which is far less than my knitted patchwork sample afghan took at 3 years! Completing a patch per day made it feel a lot less tedious too. And no sewing up to deal with either (I hate sewing).

The completed afghan now takes pride of place on our bed — much to R’s disgust. He insists on removing it every night but he’ll thank me if it gets really cold in winter!
