The Raw Silk Top Affair
A few months ago, I made myself a really pretty crocheted top ( “Cupcake” from “The Happy Hooker”) using cream raw silk. I was really quite pleased with it. It was cool and really, really, light. Then R got his hands on it…
I should explain that I rarely (if ever) load the washing machine (although I sometimes empty it). The loading is R’s job. Most of the time, there’s no problem providing he remembers one simple rule — that nothing hand-knitted or crocheted goes in the machine. I hand-wash it all. This rule came into effect a few years ago when he managed to destroy one of my hand-knitted sweaters in the washing machine (take note: Sirdar Country style in not machine washable – no matter what it says on the yarn label).
Well, he didn’t follow the rule one day and my beautiful, raw silk, top went into the machine. What emerged would barely fit a 10 year old and had all the sensuous texture of a pan scourer!
I was not pleased…
Two days later I bought 300gm of Bamboozle (100% bamboo) to “re-make” my Cupcake top. Needless to say, the new Cupcake top was very different from the previous one. I definitely won’t be wearing it without a t-shirt or cami underneath it. But to my surprise, I ended up with 100gms of unused Bamboozle. After a couple of weeks consideration, I’ve decided to make myself another Maui shrug.
So I suppose I didn’t do too badly out of “The Raw Silk Top Affair”. I ended up with 2 tops instead of 1. But, since I have no desire to re-make any more ruined items, I now have my own “special” laundry bag and R isn’t allowed to touch it!
