Stuff
Finished off a series of three articles for accessites.org yesterday. The first is due to be published on October 16th.
Spent the day working on a couple of client sites and doing some paperwork for the accountants. Managed to find time to try out my new, smaller, graphic tablet which arrived yesterday afternoon. It’s a lot less bulky than my older A4 monster, so I may actually use it more.
K’s new computer desk arrived shortly after lunchtime. It looks fine but I’m not sure it’s built to withstand a 6 year old.
Still struggling with severe deafness. R has to repeat almost everything two or three times before I can hear him. and that’s with the hearing aid. Without it, conversation is almost impossible unless I’m directly facing people. We’re supposed to be going to a final DWCon 2006 debriefing on 21st. I’m dreading it. Unless my hearing improves drastically between now and then, I’m going to miss most of what is being said.
I’ll be taking my portable loop but it does feel a bit weird pointing this black box at people whenever they talk. If there’s a rapid exchange, I end up feeling like some sort of frantic reporter who is always half a second too late! Added to which, I always have to explain what it is – otherwise people give me some very strange looks.
Generally speaking, I’m far happier avoiding conversations right now. It’s just too much work. That may sound terribly anti-social but it really is hard work. Plus, I can see people getting visibly fed up when they’re asked, yet again, to repeat something for the third time – even when they’re trying very hard to hide their impatience. Sometimes it’s just easier all round to nod, make non-committal noises and pretend that I can follow what’s going on.
I wish I could find some lip-reading classes. I lip-read pretty well (or so I’ve been told) but I think my skills could be improved. Problem is – I can’t find a local course.
