Not A Good Day

  • September 29, 2006 11:12 pm

Current Mood: Tired 🙁

Today has not been one of my better days, spoon-wise. I ache all over.

You name a joint. It hurts!

Not sure what is worse… Trying to ignore it and carry on working – which, at least, gives me something else to focus on rather than the pain. Or try to rest more – which inevitably means that I notice the pain even more.

Mind you, our copy of Wintersmith arrived the other day and, since His Nibs has now finished reading it, I suppose I could try reading that.

Problem is – I’m not sure I have the energy.

Site Extended

  • September 28, 2006 11:00 pm

Current Mood: Pleased 😀

One of my oldest clients had to, effectively, close shop earlier this year when their funding simply ran out. So I was really pleased to hear, this morning, that they’ve just managed to win a funding bid for almost a full year. Especially as one of the first things they did was to contract me to look after their site again until next July!

Now I have to go and start cleaning up the site ready for an influx of new material. It’s been languishing these last few months – which is a real pity as it’s been a really popular site. Nice to know it will carry on running for a while yet…

Awkward Kids

  • September 27, 2006 11:22 pm

Remember ‘Class Monitors’?

Well, these days, they’re called ‘VIPs’ – or at least they are in K’s school. Each morning, Miss chooses the VIP for the day and this priviliged person gets a special chair and gets to help Miss. And… oh yes…they get to wear a badge/sticker.

K has kept most of his VIP stickers from last year so I gather that, in the world of a 6 year old, these things have some kudos.

Today, K was chosen as the VIP. The first time he’s been chosen by his new teacher. Yay!

So why did the little ?$*^#$ tell his teacher that he “wasn’t allowed to wear badges“? That’s news to us. Apart from going through the pretty-standard-for-this-age phase of telling whopping fibs for no reason, he seems to be taking some sort of perverse pleasure, lately, in deliberately denying himself things that he wants and/or likes. And I have no idea why.

I intend to completely ignore this behaviour as much as possible but it completely bewilders me. Even as an experimental flexing of some sort of personal power/control muscle, it’s a bit drastic at times.

The Unseen University Cut Out Book

  • September 26, 2006 11:19 pm

Current Mood: Suprised 😮

Our copies of The Unseen University Cut Out Book arrived this morning.

Yes – ‘copies’. His Nibs ordered two copies (without mentioning this to me, I might add). One copy is to be kept untouched and the other is intended to actually ‘make the model’. Only I don’t think he bargained on the sheer size of the book (176 pages – most of them actual cutouts) or the complexity of the model(s).

One thing did suprise me. There isn’t an easy way to detach individual pages from the book so that you can cut them out properly (and forget scissors – most of the cut-outs will need a very sharp craft knife and a cutting board). I appreciate that books with detachable pages probably pose a nightmare for booksellers but I’m not sure how you’re supposed to make the models properly otherwise.

Enough is enough!

Current Mood: Thoroughly p*ssed off! 👿

I’m a member of a technical web design guild. Not long after I joined, I asked if there was anything I could do to help and ended up helping to assess applications for new members. In theory, it’s not too onerous a job as the guild has quite specific entry criteria for developers and my job was to apply them to the best of my ability.

I can’t have been doing too bad a job as I was left to do for over 2 years – during which time, two other people burnt out, one after the other. I stuck with it because I figured I should do something (rather than just sit on my backside which most other members seemed to do) to try to help other developers. And there have been times when it’s been really worthwhile. Of course, there were times when it wasn’t so hot. Getting a load of abuse from the odd person who didn’t make the required grade isn’t exactly fun but, overall, the good outweighed the bad.

Until last week…

Random Art

  • September 19, 2006 2:15 pm

Um… did I mention that the Random Art in the sidebar is all mine?

I’ve put together a script that pulls random images from pre-designated sub-directory. So far, it’s working fine but I may need to tweak it as, and when, I get around to adding some new images to the Gallery.

Web Course

  • September 18, 2006 1:49 pm

I’ve been invited by the Society of Information Technology Management (SOCITM) to provide a web accessibility course in late November.

The course content isn’t a problem. It’s how I manage to deliver the content over 5 hours without boring the audience to death that I’m having problems with.

I also forsee lots of arguments with Powerpoint on the horizon – with Powerpoint winning most of the time – giving K the opportunity to add a whole new set of words to his vocabulary!

Panic over…

  • September 17, 2006 9:00 pm

K went missing for about 45 minutes earlier today.

When I say ‘missing’, I mean we couldn’t find him, it was lunchtime and he wasn’t beating the door down demanding food with menaces. For a six year old who probably lists eating as one of his top 3 occupations, this was a Major Hiccup.

And Yet More Candles

  • September 16, 2006 8:34 pm

Bought some new zinc-cored wick the other day as I’m fed up with having to soak wicks in melted beeswax before I can use it with beeswax tealights or votives. Seeing it on the site where I normally buy all of my beeswax and wick, I thought I’d found my holy grail and I ordered 5 metres of the appropriate size.

Not With A Very Long Bargepole!

  • September 11, 2006 1:25 pm

Current Mood: Evil 👿

A decidedly ‘ex’ client of mine decided to get in touch with me, out of the blue, this morning.

I have no idea which planet this person is currently occupying but it’s not this one!
