We have a new pet!
Last Saturday morning, K went to a summer fair at the local youth club. A couple of hours later, he returned — looking slightly guilty — with one hand behind his back and a story about winning a prize at one of the fair booths. Eventually, the hand came out from behind his back to reveal a goldfish!
School Play
K has a part in his first major school play. The play is Beauty & the Beast and will, I assume, be a musical.
He had an audition about two weeks ago (when he was apparently told that he had a beautiful voice) and found out that he’d been given a part a few days later. Rehearsals are now about to start in earnest with the play scheduled for performances in July.
I Have Another Teenager
Yesterday was K’s 13th birthday, so I now have another one of these…
Still Pretty Good
K is now into his second month of almost no pain!
We did have a hiccup 2 weeks ago when the stomach pain returned with a vengeance. I thought he’d have to go right back to just one lesson in school each day but just as we were going to start that routine all over again, the pain suddenly stopped again.
He still has back pain but it’s not too bad & after having it for almost 5 years, he’s well used to coping with it. In fact, he felt so good last week that he joined in the PE lesson last week — a double lesson of team athletics.
K Update
Shhh! Don’t say anything out loud but K hasn’t had any prolonged bouts of abdominal pain for about 4 weeks now!
We’ve had periods like this before but nothing this long for about a year or so. He’s back at school full time and is even starting to ask if he can go to the odd after-school club.
Child’s Ribbed Hat

I’ve been meaning to write this up for ages! When I made K a cabled jumper last year, I had enough yarn left to knit him a matching hat, so I same up with this pattern. It’s designed to fit a 20 inch head circumference.
Not A Good Day…
K has been really bad today. 🙁 The pain is so severe that he can’t even walk slowly across a room without help and he is constantly tired. Even going out in the wheelchair isn’t an option as the slightest bump or uneven piece of ground causes yet more pain.
What Is it With Schools?
I’m not convinced that K’s school understand how terribly debilitating his pain is. And — given that this is a school that is supposed to specialise in supporting children with physical disabilities — they aren’t being as supportive as I hoped they might be.
Update
It’s been a busy few weeks. K is still off school (and has been since the beginning of June) with daily severe pain and only the occasional pain free couple of hours. We’ve made a number attempts to get him back to school but each one has failed when he has been really unwell first thing in the morning. It’s incredibly frustrating and depressing for everyone when this happens again & again, so we’re pretty close to giving up entirely and focusing on getting him ready for the move to secondary school in September.
