Not A Good Day…
K has been really bad today. 🙁 The pain is so severe that he can’t even walk slowly across a room without help and he is constantly tired. Even going out in the wheelchair isn’t an option as the slightest bump or uneven piece of ground causes yet more pain.
He has now been off school for almost 3 weeks. Ever since the day that they refused to contact me and forced him to stay in school. If this level of pain continues, I don’t see him returning to school this side of Christmas. So every week, I will have to go through the routine of contacting the school and telling them that he won’t be in this week as it seems that “he won’t be in until further notice” isn’t acceptable to them.
So I’m now back to home schooling after an 11 year break from it. We’re not doing too bad. Since today was especially difficult, we stuck to doing “lighter” craft-based work that he could manage whilst on the couch. The Brain Training game that I bought last week arrived at lunch time, so that helped. Since none of the pain meds work, computer and DS still remain the number 1 pain relievers.
I’ve set up an old laptop as a “school” computer — which means that he can still play educational games (like Zoombinis or Incredible Machine), use MS Office, access Google etc without being tempted into playing on Roblox or Minecraft. He gets to play those on his own desktop after 3pm 🙂
That said, we did some basic scripting using Lua on Roblox yesterday as I figured that learning how to debug, use loops, conditionals and boolean logic had to be a Good Thing(tm). I managed to stay half a step ahead of him thanks to the Roblox Wiki (hey – I’d never even heard of Lua until yesterday!) and, after about an hour, we had managed to create our very own working baby script.
He’s also been forging ahead with Algebra. We found out that he’s about 2 steps ahead of his year on Monday thanks to the work that Mum has been giving him. Meanwhile, I’m now only working a few hours a day (mostly in the evenings) but if I don’t take on any new large projects, that should be enough. One thing I have noticed — home schooling is a lot easier with on-tap broadband access than it was with almost non-existent access 11 years ago!
