Sampler Afghan
This has to count as my longest project ever! Started it in July 2007 and didn’t finish it until April 2010. In my defence, the idea was to use only leftover scraps of yarn and it does take a while to build enough double knit scraps to create something of this size. It’s about 8ft wide by 5ft long (I haven’t actually measured it) but it fits a good sized double bed with ease and is made up of 42 squares. The other reason for doing this was to try out different techniques. Creating it confirmed that I hate intarsia…
K Update
K has been improving steadily since Christmas. We haven’t had to use the wheelchair for weeks and he’s even walking to & from school by himself. Yay!
It’s All A Bit Slow…
Seem to have hit a bit of a slow spell since Christmas. I’ve got three projects on the go — all started mid-December — and not one of them is close to being finished yet!
Boot Cuffs
I had some black fun fur cuffs hanging around that I used to wear over the top of a short pair of boots (since gone). Saw a pattern for boot cuffs and thought I’d improvise my own,
K’s Cabled Sweater
K needed a new winter sweater. Because he hates crew or turtle necks, it had to be a V-neck. Fortunately, I already had a basic pattern for a child’s chunky V-neck sweater that I’ve used many times over the years, so it was just a case of finding the right yarn. He finally settled for some bright blue Wendy Swiftknit that I spotted on eBay. He also asked for “some of those twisty things” on his sweater — which turned out to be cables, so I incorporated two mirrored cables into the front & back plus a single cable along…
Armwarmers – Take 2
OK – the shirring elastic really helped! Two rows double-stranded at the upper cuff works really well. And since the elastic is black and the yarn in purple & black, you can’t see it.
Armwarmers
Just completed some armwarmers. They fit really well but started to slip down rather quickly when I tried wearing them today (it’s really that cold). I’ve just ordered some black shirring elastic to add to the upper cuff. I hope it will be strong enough. I really like the yarn but it is a little on the heavy side. Immediately started some matching fingerless gloves (had one knitted in a few hours). Then I might use up the rest of the yarn to make another Boneyard Shawl. A Miserable Monday
It’s cold and raining here. A typical UK November day.
Not So Good
K hasn’t had a good week at all 🙁
Having done so very well with the new patches since the end of August, he suddenly had a relapse this week. 9 – 10 hours of pain every day. Needless to say, he didn’t go to school all week, so I had the weird experience of going to the (standard) parent-teacher meeting this term when he wasn’t even in school.
Scrap Hat
And I still had scraps of yarn left from the Granny Afghan and the Quilt Wrap! Given the increasingly cold weather and the fact that I’d recently had my hair cut quite short, I decided that a hat was in order. Enter the Scrappy Hat. I improvised on the original hat a little by adding a plain shaped crown worked on double-points. The final hat fits perfectly, is lovely and warm, matches the Quilt Wrap and is bright enough to cheer me up on a cold miserable day. I reckon I did quite well with that batch of yarns!
