Site Extended

One of my oldest clients had to, effectively, close shop earlier this year when their funding simply ran out. So I was really pleased to hear, this morning, that they’ve just managed to win a funding bid for almost a full year. Especially as one of the first things they did was to contract me to look after their site again until next July!

Now I have to go and start cleaning up the site ready for an influx of new material. It’s been languishing these last few months – which is a real pity as it’s been a really popular site. Nice to know it will carry on running for a while yet…

The Unseen University Cut Out Book

Current Mood: Suprised ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Our copies of The Unseen University Cut Out Book arrived this morning.

Yes – ‘copies’. His Nibs ordered two copies (without mentioning this to me, I might add). One copy is to be kept untouched and the other is intended to actually ‘make the model’. Only I don’t think he bargained on the sheer size of the book (176 pages – most of them actual cutouts) or the complexity of the model(s).

One thing did suprise me. There isn’t an easy way to detach individual pages from the book so that you can cut them out properly (and forget scissors – most of the cut-outs will need a very sharp craft knife and a cutting board). I appreciate that books with detachable pages probably pose a nightmare for booksellers but I’m not sure how you’re supposed to make the models properly otherwise.

Enough is enough!

Current Mood: Thoroughly p*ssed off! ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

I’m a member of a technical web design guild. Not long after I joined, I asked if there was anything I could do to help and ended up helping to assess applications for new members. In theory, it’s not too onerous a job as the guild has quite specific entry criteria for developers and my job was to apply them to the best of my ability.

I can’t have been doing too bad a job as I was left to do for over 2 years – during which time, two other people burnt out, one after the other. I stuck with it because I figured I should do something (rather than just sit on my backside which most other members seemed to do) to try to help other developers. And there have been times when it’s been really worthwhile. Of course, there were times when it wasn’t so hot. Getting a load of abuse from the odd person who didn’t make the required grade isn’t exactly fun but, overall, the good outweighed the bad.

Until last week…

Web Course

  • September 18, 2006 1:49 pm

I’ve been invited by the Society of Information Technology Management (SOCITM) to provide a web accessibility course in late November.

The course content isn’t a problem. It’s how I manage to deliver the content over 5 hours without boring the audience to death that I’m having problems with.

I also forsee lots of arguments with Powerpoint on the horizon – with Powerpoint winning most of the time – giving K the opportunity to add a whole new set of words to his vocabulary!

And Yet More Candles

  • September 16, 2006 8:34 pm

Bought some new zinc-cored wick the other day as I’m fed up with having to soak wicks in melted beeswax before I can use it with beeswax tealights or votives. Seeing it on the site where I normally buy all of my beeswax and wick, I thought I’d found my holy grail and I ordered 5 metres of the appropriate size.

Not With A Very Long Bargepole!

A decidedly ‘ex’ client of mine decided to get in touch with me, out of the blue, this morning.

I have no idea which planet this person is currently occupying but it’s not this one!

It might be finished by November

The chunky winter cardigan is almost half-finished. I managed to add another 8-10 inches over the weekend. I’ve also finally figured out that it’s knitted from one side to the other rather than from top to bottom. At least the pattern makes sense now!

Candles and More Candles

I managed to make some candles today. The first batch I’ve made in ages (the candlemaking session I ran at the Discworld Con doesn’t count).

Hassled, Harried And Bewildered

Current mood: Angry ๐Ÿ˜ก

I am not having a good week and it’s only halfway through.

Having taken over a site two years ago and pretty much turned it from an embarrassment into something pretty neat, I know find myself being continually questioned about what the new site can, or can’t do.

Get the walking stick out!

  • August 28, 2006 9:54 pm

Having managed to allow his back to heal after last weekend, R managed to hurt it again this afternoon. Or rather K did when he decided to do one of his kamikaze backward lunges whilst holding R’s hand.

So it’s back to using a walking stick, no standing for any length of time and painkillers. Fortunately, we managed to pick up a couple of collapsible walking sticks the other day so we can now do “his n’ her” matching walking sticks on occasions.
