Bad Day
I’ve been ill all day. I can only assume it’s all of the trauma from Sunday finally coming out.
Typical of me. Great in a crisis but when it’s finally over, I go to pieces completely. I only wish I could manage this kind of control at other times. It could come in rather handy.
Dog Attack
At 1:30pm on on Sunday, K (aged 7) asked if he could go out and play in the street. As it was sunny and quiet, we said OK. So he ran off up the road to call for his friends. On the way up the street, he passed a woman sitting on the front step of her house whilst behind her, in the open doorway, were 2 German Shepherd dogs. As K ran past, one of the dogs got past her, jumped the gate and attacked him. K tried to run away and either fell or was knocked over by the dog who held him down and bit his back.
Is There A Bug Going Round?
K’s been ill today.
He went to the optician’s yesterday and later complained that the light that had been shone into his eyes had given him a bad headache. So bad that we had to pick him up from school before lunch time.
Within a few hours, he had a high temperature.
An hour later, he threw up!
Bonfire Night
However, we only had a few sparklers and some toffee (actually chocolate coated) apples.
Our yard-garden is so small that anything resembling a small bonfire would threaten the house. And the last time we tried to do the whole ‘firework thing’, there was so much smoke hanging over the yard that we could barely see the fireworks!
Fortunately K isn’t that bothered by fireworks whilst N is currently doing the whole “I’m way to cool to get excited about anything” teenage bit. So it wasn’t as if anyone felt they’d missed out on anything major.
Besides, there’s always everyone else’s fireworks to watch….
A Slice Of What?
I mentioned in a previous post that our experiences when eating at the ‘Slice’ restaurant at the Premier Travel Inn, Euston, were less than positive and promised to provide details.
Well, here they are…
Back Again
We’ve just got back from a few days in London.
Travelled on Friday evening and stayed near Euston overnight and then went onto to Ruislip on the Saturday morning for a final Discword Convention 2006 Committee meeting that took most of Saturday afternoon. R, K and I spent the night at a local bed and breakfast whilst N stayed at a friend’s house.
Caught up with friends on Sunday morning then back to Euston again.
Stuff
Finished off a series of three articles for accessites.org yesterday. The first is due to be published on October 16th.
Spent the day working on a couple of client sites and doing some paperwork for the accountants. Managed to find time to try out my new, smaller, graphic tablet which arrived yesterday afternoon. It’s a lot less bulky than my older A4 monster, so I may actually use it more.
When You Earn Your Living At A Keyboard…
… try not to drop red hot wax on your right hand.
This tip is brought to you courtesy of some very slow, one-handed typing.
Text Announcements
I was particularly interested in the BBC’s recent article on LAMA (Location Aware Messaging for Accessibility). As someone whose hearing regularly goes from semi-reasonable to profoundly deaf, anything that allows me to see/hear public announcements in train stations would be a godsend. Any sound in an echoing environment is a problem and hearing aids, which tend to make sounds ‘tinny’ at the best of times, just make it worse. I have, literally, missed trains before now because the relevant PA announcement has been turned into a meaningless gabble by my hearing aid.
We’re getting new bookcases
The joiner arrived today to measure up and design our new bookcases.
We’ve been promising ourselves some really serious bookcases for over 6 years – in fact, ever since we moved into this house. The downstairs room has a really high ceiling and deep alcoves either side of the chimney breast that really cry out for shelving of some description. And given the sheer number of books we have, we need all the shelves we can get!
